Abstract:

This report examines professional doctorate programs in Australian universities, and evaluates the extent to which such programs have developed practices for sustaining closer collaboration between universities and industry. The research method involved a literature review, surveys, feedback from industry, the professions and participants, and a series of micro studies. The results show that while there is an increase in the number of professional doctorates, industry focused doctoral education is still in its infancy and there is a lack of sustainable partnerships between universities and industry. The report makes further recommendations such as the development of deep links between universities and industry, joint ownership and delivery of programs and more collaborative research.
