Abstract:

Environmental protection in Brazil is a source of mounting world-wide concern. It is a complex issue, involving the preservation of unique ecosystems not only in Amazonia but also in representative areas around the country. This includes native Indian tribes whose homes are often located in these areas and the global warming trend which results in part from the reduction in the world’s forest.

Training of professionals to work in environmental affairs in Brazil is recent. The environmental training process began in the 1980’s, after the government established the National Environment Policy. At the inception of the environmental education process in Brazil, there was a need to develop a strategy to re-orient the existing education and research system towards environmental issues. This is currently being done by creating multidisciplinary environmental consciousness in primary and secondary schools, including technical schools, universities and research institutions.
