Final report: inquiry into rural and regional tourism

The Final Report for the Inquiry into Rural and Regional Tourism was tabled in the Parliament on Wednesday 30th July 2008 in the Legislative Council by Committee Chair Damian Drum MLC and in the Legislative Assembly by Committee Member Kirstie Marshall MP. The Government has six months in which to table a response to the Committee’s Final Report.

The report begins with a historical overview of travel and tourism. The next chapter covers the institutional framework for tourism and is followed by chapters on the economics of rural and regional tourism; the need to maintain and increase visitation; enhance infrastructure; build service capacity and respond to disasters and environmental threats This report addresses some of the major issues in the area of tourism development in Victoria. Further research focussing on rural and regional Victoria should be undertaken in order to gain a more comprehensive picture of the benefits of tourism and ways to develop this important industry into the future. 39 recommendations are detailed.
