Abstract:

The Options for Work and Education (OWE) project was designed to find alternative ways of helping students who are not achieving, or under achieving in the school environment, and are at risk of being marginalised to gain the skills and confidence to explore pathways to further education and/or employment. Students participating in the ten week OWE program do a TAFE certificate course one day a week, work with local employers another day and complete their Year 10 studies at school three days a week. The program's main success has been the improvements in the students' confidence, self esteem, attitudes to work and education, and levels of achievement.
